Against All the Others: Porsche's Racing History, Volume 2 - 1969, introduces the mighty Typ 917, both to its drivers who were not quite prepared for its fantastic speed and power, and to competitors who were not certain if even the drivers knew where the 917 was going. Its aerodynamics may have been perfect for high track speeds and low-altitude flights, but absent was the excellent road holding that long had been a well-proven Porsche bragging right. Drivers and engineers realized the 917 needed lots of work, but Porsche had other pathways to the winner's circle. A new Typ 908/02 Spyder supplemented the improved short- and longtail 908 coupes, and the Typ claimed dozens of victories. And let's not forget the ever more reliable 911s, which captured international GT titles, a French Rally championship, and even the Under-2.0-Liter title in the SCCA Trans-Am series.

This second in our series of Porsche racing history continues our meticulously detailed examination of the engineering developments, racing venues and series, and people behind the Porsche name. The 119 individual racing and testing reports from drivers, engineers, mechanics, managers, and outside observers—in their own words— provide new insights and fresh perspective of the front-straight battles and back-room chicanery that ultimately brought Porsche its first World Manufacturer's Championship.
